Boko Haram 2014: Fear in Akwa Ibom over Conspiracy to Attack UNIUYO

It’s really tough, because right now, both the students, staff and authorities of the University of Uyo are having some serious issue, over leak information that the insurgency, Boko Haram plans to bomb the university.

It’s truth that tension has been high in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, even as security officials have been forced to take some pre-emptive measures in some institutions said to have been listed for attacks by the Boko Haram Islamists sect over the past few weeks.

According to the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Lt. Col. N.U.V. Efik, confirmed that UNIUYO was one of the targets which has been scheduled and planned for attack by the insurgents and warned students to be more security conscious as they resumed for the new semester.

This was confirmed by a letter which was sent to the school security leader, signed by the former military chief, which was copied to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Comfort Ekpo and all principal officers of the institution, warned members of the community to take security precautions and report any kind of suspicious movement.

Looking at the letter, which read:
“Intelligence reports received at this department indicate that the university has been earmarked as one of the major targets in the event of an attack in Akwa Ibom State.

“Consequently, every member of the university community is urged to please be security conscious, observant and report any suspicious movement or thing to the security officer nearest to him or her.

“As a pre-emptive measure to safeguard the university from attack, all small gates leading into both annex and town campuses would be closed to all between 12 noon and 3:00 pm every Friday and anyone who come close to the gate will have themselves to blame.

The letter also read: “Members of the university community are advised to use the main gates during the period as other measures deemed necessary for the safety of the community will be communicated to you from time to time.”

When Dailyschoolnews Nigeria visited the township campus of the institution, it was observed that students and other members of the institution observed the security measures while routine internal security checks on vehicles have been stepped up.

Please we ask all students to please, be careful and anyone who is behaving abnormal or acting like they don’t know the area, you have the full “right” to report them or question them.
