We’ve just confirmed that the Abia State University (ABSU) will be resuming full academic activities on the 28th of January, 2019, shunning the ongoing ASUU strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, and full academic activities are currently ongoing.
Academic activities have resumed in full force in Abia State University, Uturu, despite the lingering academic industrial showdown which is organized by the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU).
For those who are not aware, the ASUU national body embarked on strike since 4th November 2018, following non-implementation of the 2009 agreement with the federal government as well as lack of funding of public universities in Nigeria.

When our correspondent visited the academic institution, she discovered that students are already taking lectures in their respective departments, while most lecturers were also spotted in the campus.
Not only this, but she also discovered that there is an upcoming election of the Students Union of Government (SUG), although the date is yet to be fixed.
When our correspondent, Faith contacted the vice chancellor of the academic institution, Prof. Eleazar Uche Ikonne, clearly disclosed to her that the ASUU strike had nothing to do with the university, remarking that the university earlier joined in solidarity with other sister universities in the country.
Prof. Eleazar Uche Ikonne however, regretted that the lingering industrial showdown by the Academic Staff Union had affected the smooth running of institution activities in the country, decried lack of willingness of the federal government and the striking lecturers to reach a consensus so that universities could resume, and students would come back to start learning.
According to the ABSU Vice-Chancellor, who said and I quote below;
“The ASUU strike has nothing to do with our school; we only joined in solidarity with others and just to respect the union. But we have to cultivate our own backyard now.
At a point you have to sympathise and at other point, you have to look at yourself. So, the lecturers here agreed that we pull out of the strike by resuming academic activities earnestly”.
When our correspondent interviewed some of Absu students, the students emphatically expressed gladness that the university defied all odds to return the students to the classroom, putting the students first. The students also went on to urge other institutions in the country to help their colleagues and ensure they go back to their classroom.
