What is Cut off Marks?

Before knowing this tertiary institution’s cut off mark, it is important you know the meaning of Cut off mark.

In Nigerian tertiary institutions, Cut off Marks is an agreed score which is usually agreed and set by a particular institution as the basic score of admitting students into the department of study (course). This score is usually accredited to candidates based on their performance in a particular examination, which is usually Post UTME screening, or few institutions use the JAMB score.

For candidates who scored above the required cut off mark of their selected institution (in this case, Uniport), they stand a better chance of getting admitted and are surely offered preferential treatment in the admission process above candidates who scored the exacts cut off mark. However, for candidates who scored below the cut off marks, their chance of getting admitted is almost 0%.

JAMB Cut off Mark

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that the fixed cut off mark for the University of Port Harcourt is 150.

You might ask questions like: I had 150 and above but was not still given the admission to study my desired course?

This tertiary institution, like most academic institutions in Nigeria, usually considers first, candidates with higher scores for admission, compared to candidates with lower scores though might meet the cut-off mark of 150.

UniPort Departmental Cut off Mark.

The surprising fact about the University of Port Harcourt is that it really does not have a specific cut off mark for courses. This means that candidates who have scored a minimum of 150 in their UTME exercise are qualified to apply for any course of their choice.

However, due to the huge population of candidates who wish to study at the University of Port Harcourt, the admission processes are truly competitive and admissions are given solely based on the High JAMB scores and Post UTME scores.

Here are Uniport Courses and their cut off Mark.

UNIPORT Admission Screening.

The Uniport management usually holds her admission screening exercises a couple of weeks after the UTME result is out. Candidates who selected the school as their first choice during the UTME registration and scored above 150 are to proceed for the pre-screening exercise once it’s announced.

Uniport Post UTME Documents:

  • O’level Result,
  • JAMB registration print out only.
  • Uniport Post UTME screening printout. (However, the Uniport Post UTME screening form is the only document required.)

It is better to arrive at the screening venue early and locate the Hall where you’ll be sitting for the screening examination.

The second phase of the screening is usually after the school administration releases her admission list. Candidates offered admission will be invited for another screening exercise. The documents required include:

  1. Original copies of their educational qualifications (Statements of Results/Certificates).
  2. N/B: Take note that the school will not accept cases of awaiting results.
  3. Birth Certification/Age Declaration.
  4. A letter of good conduct from your Village Head or a responsible member of your community/or civil servant not below Grade Level 10 or equivalent in the private sector.
  5. Certificate of Local Government of origin;
  6. Admission letter.
