The striking union, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has revealed through its counsel, that they will be filing an appeal against the National Industrial Court which directed the union to resume work within seven (7) days.
Counsel for ASUU, Femi Falana (SAN), shares this information on Thursday, in FCT Abuja.
The ASUU strike started earlier this year, particularly on the 14th of February, saying it’s in the best interest of Nigerians and its educational sector that the federal government heeds to its demands for improved funding for universities and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.
Recalled on Wednesday, Justice Polycarp Hamman of the Nigerian Industrial Court ordered the union’s members back to work.
Reacting to the industrial court ruling, Femi Falana, ASUU representative said:
“We are filing the appeal today, (Friday) morning. We just got the certified true copy of the judgment on Thursday. The appeal will be filed first thing Friday morning.”
Vice-Chancellors Reacts.
Reacting to the ruling of the Industrial court mandating all the striking unions back to the classroom, the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities has said that the crisis between the Federal Government and ASUU is not an issue that should be taken to court at the first place, condemning the act.
The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) chairman, Prof. Samuel Edoumiekumo, said,
“The matter is not a court issue. A lecturing job is not one you force people to do because it is a knowledge-based job.”
FG Declared War.
Reacting to the federal government taking ASUU to court, the Chairman of Ebonyi State University’s ASUU chapter, Ikechukwu Igwenyi, on Thursday, disclosed that with the court order, the Federal Government has declared “war” against members of the striking union.
The ASUU chairman of Ebonyi state University Union has declared “no work, no pay” policy implemented by the federal government shows the authorities lack an understanding of the nature of the contract between the lecturers and their employees.
