It seems like the issue between the Federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities is just beginning, as the ASUU board has disclosed that JAMB has no power to conduct admission or offer admission.
If you recall, few years ago, students whose names appeared on the school portal are 100% admitted, but between 2018 till date, if a candidate’s name doesn’t appear on the JAMB Caps, their admission is ruled false. ASUU seems to be fighting against this power wield by JAMB in conducting admissions.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) body, has stated that the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has no right to conduct admission into higher institutions within Nigerian universities.
Speaking on this issue which was recently brought up, the ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke noted that JAMB’s move to handle higher institutions admission was an intrusion and trespassing of JAMB into University autonomy, which was not supposed to be so.
Professor Emmanuel Osodeke who described JAMB as an examination body and clearinghouse for admission into tertiary institutions, clearly pointed out that JAMB was specifically created by an Act of the National Assembly in 1978 and is responsible for the conduct of matriculation examinations for admission into a tertiary institution in Nigeria, appointment of examiners and collection/dissemination of information on all matters relating to entrance examinations.
The ASUU President further disclosed that its the sole responsibility of each university senate (management board) to supervise all academic matters in the university. Including the following:
- Setting the admission requirements,
- Approval of university undergraduate,
- Postgraduate programmes.
The statement read;
“Giving admission to candidates into a University is the sole responsibility and duty of the varsity’s senate, while regulation or accreditation of programmers is the prerogative of National Universities Commission (NUC). However, this matter has deteriorated to the extent that JAMB is now operating outside its jurisdiction of collecting and disseminating information on matters relating to admissions from respective institutions based on senate recommendations. “Using this medium and this 1-month ASUU warning strike, we are calling on JAMB to desist from overstepping its original mandate and allow each University in Nigeria to decide on admission policies and processes.”
