President Buhari Gives Education Minister 14 Days To End ASUU Strike

Is it time to be hopeful for at least, the intervention of the President authoritatively speaking on the lingering ASUU Strike? The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, to resolve the prolonged industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other university-based unions, so Nigerian students can resume normal school activities.

President Muhammadu Buhari gave the directive Tuesday, 19th July, after receiving briefings from the relevant government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) involved in the ongoing efforts to end the face-off with the university unions.

The president called these agencies to get more information on why the strike had persisted this long without any notable change or steps taken to ensure this never happens again.

Don’t forget that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had embarked on a 30 days (one month) warning strike, on February 14, and other unions also joined them over the alleged inability of the federal government to meet up with their demands.

After the meeting of the above-mentioned agencies and the president, the President ordered the education minister to ensure that the areas of disagreements were sorted out within two weeks and report back to him on steps taken to ensure students return back to the classroom.

Sources at the meeting also said that the President directed that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige to be in any of the meetings to resolve the crisis with the striking unions.

The sources further disclosed that the president also asked the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, to be part of the team to interface with the striking unions.

In attendance at the meeting were the following personnel: Including

  • Minister of Education, Malam Adamu,
  • the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr Zainab Ahmed,
  • Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Ngige,
  • Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami,
  • Head of Service of the Federation, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan,
  • Chairman of National Salaries Income and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta,
  • Director-General Budget Office, Ben Akabueze.

Is it time for students to start dusting their bags, arranging their clothes, to return back to school? We’ll certainly know the outcome in two weeks’ time. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope anything ASUU strike never happens again!
