It is another sad end to a meeting that the outcome was expected to bring joy, happiness and revival to Nigerian students and parents alike. But the hope was shattered beyond repair, as ASUU announced that they have rejected Federal Government’s offer to suspend the strike.
After the meeting ended without any progressive outcome, ASUU President refused to speak to journalists and NAN’s on the details of the meeting. one of the union members who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that there was nothing new except that the government team wanted them to call off the strike for a period of time which they rejected, and the federal government didn’t bring any viable solution to the table.
ASUU Rejected FG Offer To Suspend Strike
Let’s not forget that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) body has just concluded the 2022 examination that will admit 2022 candidates into various universities in Nigeria. Which way forward for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 students who are yet to be through with their academic calendar?
The honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige decided to speak to journalists after the meeting, and claimed that negotiations were fruitful and they are ending ASUU to call off the strike soon.
The Honourable minister said and I quote below:
“We have reached some agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, and we hope that by next week, those agreements will be maturing and the different unions will have something to tell their members so that they can call off the strike.
“We have put some timelines for some aspects like the renegotiation of 2009 agreement in terms of the condition of service and wage review. So, we are hopeful that by next weekend, the unions will see a conclusion in that area”.
The issue on ground is that Nigerians are confused now, who is speaking the truth? ASUU or Federal government? The truth is that only time will tell whether FG offered any solution or just asked the Union to suspend the strike till further notice.
