The Nigerian Minister of Labour and employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, surprised the nation after disclosing that he has three children in public universities in the country, and they are being affected by this current ASUU strike.
Dr. Chris Ngige who appeared on Arise TV, shocked the viewers when reacting to the ongoing strike action by lecturers which has crippled academic activities in universities within the past eight (8) months.
The minister insisted that he is a very big stakeholder in the Nigerian public tertiary school system, alleged that ASUU members have most of their children in private universities, which is why they don’t care for the welfare of other Nigerian students.
The minister said and I quote below;
“I have three biological children in public tertiary institutions in Nigeria. They are in public universities; they are not in private universities. Unlike most ASUU members who have majority of their children in private universities, three of mine are going to federal institutions. So, I am a very big stakeholder in the public tertiary school system.
“I want to disagree here when ASUU says politicians don’t care because they have taken their children abroad, I want to publicly say here that Chris Ngige cares for Public institutions because my children are not abroad even though they have dual nationality, – two of them have American citizenship; they can be in America but I decided that they be here with me.
“So, ASUU cannot accuse me of not being nationalistic enough. Anything that will help the university system here, I am in the forefront and ensuring the ASUU strike comes to an end and the student return to classroom.”
