ASUU Strike Update: Federal Gov’t is a Failure – ASUU Vows to Continue Protest

Latest educational news reaching us today, is that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has declared that the union has lost it’s confidence in the ability of the Nigerian Federal Government to resolve current ongoing face-off between the Union and the Federal government.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the Taraba State University chapter has began an indefinite strike today, the 3rd of April 2019.

According to a statement which was released from the ASUU chairman of Taraba State University, Dr Samuel Shikaa, has disclosed that the aggrieved lecturers had embarked on a strike action in 2018 but decided to suspend it when the Taraba government promised to meet its demands, including the payment of earned academic allowances from 2014 till date, and the provision of required infrastructure to enhance teaching and learning.

Dr. Samuel Shikaa said the state government is yet to fulfil their promises which is why they are going on an indefinite strike.

The ASUU boss also said that the Union had lost faith in the Federal Government, since the federal government have failed to remain committed to the terms of the agreement it entered into with the government as far back as 1999.

The Boss did not stop there, as he insists that one of the reasons they are insisting that their demands must be met is because the government initially denied the existence of the 2009 agreement which was signed by its officials.

“We can no longer trust government; we have lost faith in its willingness to deliver on the issues that led to the strike in the first place,” he said.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chairman is also using the medium, to call upon the Federal Government to find a permanent solution to the impasse so students could return to school.

I don’t really know what else to say, if ASUU chairman has loss faith in the federal government, then what is the fate of the Nigerian students?
