Nigeria Universities – Polytechnics and College of Education news Nigerian Educational News | Zenith Of Educational NewsLATEST information reaching our news desk today, is that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) senate, has disclosed that they will embark on an indefinite strike, starting from the 25th of February.
Recall that we once post an article, stating that the union had earlier on the 11th of February, issued a two weeks ultimatum, where the ASUP management board, urged the federal government to immediately implement the agreement it reached with the union which led to the suspension of its strike in July 2014.
While speaking with news men, including a Daily school News correspondent, the President of ASUP, Comrade Chibuzor Asomuga, disclosed this information at the end of the national executive council (NEC) meeting of the union, where the union frowned over the federal government’s failure to implement the agreement it reached with the union.
According to the ASUP president, the ASUP board suspended the strike in July 2014, based on the plea of the Honorable Minister of Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau who then requested for a three month moratorium to enable him tackle the lingering problems, where he assured them that he’ll get back to them.
However, since the suspension of the strike none of the issues has been addressed to a logical conclusion with the board.
Our correspondent was also able to learn, that other resolution reached at the end of the NEC meeting in Abuja, included that “the Federal Government should, without further delay dissolve the Governing Councils of the Federal polytechnics Oko and Ado Ekiti as they have become burdens rather than solutions to the myriad of problems bedeviling the Polytechnic Sector.
They also reached a resolution, saying “That the circular issued by the Ministry of Education suspending the implementation CONTISS 15 Migration be withdrawn with immediate effect as the suspension is ill-timed and counterproductive and will create further tension in the sector.
Another high point, is that “the Managements and Councils of Polytechnics in Nigeria must desist from interfering in ASUP activities in their academic Institutions and stop forthwith the intimidation of staff who insists that proper things be done.”
We hope that this strike will NOT be hold, and the federal government , together with the Minister of education, resolve this issue with ASUP once, and for all.
