Nigeria Universities – Polytechnics and College of Education news Nigerian Educational News | Zenith Of Educational NewsLATEST educational news reaching our news board today, is that the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) have finally suspended its seven-month-old strike, following the intervention by the Chairmen of Governing Councils of Federal Colleges of Education and assurances that the outstanding issues would be resolved by the federal government within a short period of time.
According to Faith, who is a Dailyschoolnews Nigeria correspondent, was able to gathered that, the suspension of COEASU’s seven month old strike would however be upheld following today’s meeting, which will be held with the newly appointed minister of Education, Alhaji (Ibrahim Shekaru) with officials of the union.
According to information relayed by the Chairman of the Committee of Council Chairmen of the Federal College of Education’s, Senator Emmanuel Anosike, reading from the resolutions reached at the end of a five hour meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, disclosed that the chairman’s union had finally agreed, that the Nigeria federal government had met a reasonable number of its demands, so there’s sufficient reasons why the strike has been called off.
According to what Senator Emmanuel Anosike said and we quote: “The college of education academic staff union has agreed to suspend its strike in principle subject to the following: that there would be no victimisation of its members and salaries with held would be paid by the government to the lecturers” he said.
The meeting, where the strike was agreed upon to be called off, had in attendance the officials of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), COEASU and NASU executive members.
The National Chairman of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Mr. Okoro Asagha, who said something very important which is quoted below, while addressing the meeting, said the union was concerned that its members resume work with motivation and gusto.
“We should not go on strike before we get things done. Issues such as needs assessment, and migration of staff for which a presidential circular already exists, should be taken care of before any union goes on strike,” he said.
“Once we tie all these loose ends, only then we will just dot the ‘I’s and cross the ‘T’s. This is the determinant week, I am sure we would all go home smiling,” he finally said.
So persons are still curious about why the union went on the 7 month old strike. The reason why the lecturers’ went on striking, is that their demands include the following:
Proper funding of the colleges,
Adequate welfare for lecturers.
