Nigeria House of Reps Passes Bill Seeking Increment of Corps Members Allowance

This is good news to all serving and upcoming corps members, as the Nigerian House of Representatives, yesterday did actually passed for third reading, a Bill for an Act, which is seeking to amend the National Youth Service Corps Act 2004, and the purpose of this bill is to bring an increment in the allowance earned by Corps members in the country.

It’s important to note that this Bill which also seeks to provide mandatory life insurance to Corps members, was mainly sponsored by Honorable Joan Mrakpor, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from Delta State.

This bill was unanimously adopted by members of the House of Representatives.

Some passage of the Bill submitted by Hon. Joan disclosed that corps members who have acquired special business skill from the Service will be able to have access to loan to start up their business.

Honorable Joan Mrakpor, while calling on his colleagues to support the passage of the bill for the betterment of Nigeria’s youth, disclosed that the main purpose of the Bill’s amendment was to make sure that the aim of the NYSC scheme was not defeated and forsaken. The honorable member also went on to say that the passage of this bill would reduce the number of graduates relying on white collar jobs in the country.

Following its passage, the House of Representatives referred the Bill to the adhoc committee on constitution review for further legislative input.
