Nigeria Universities – Polytechnics and College of Education news Nigerian Educational News | Zenith Of Educational NewsLatest news reaching our news desk today, is that the supervising Minister of Education had yesterday, slammed the Council members of tertiary institutions, saying that the council members should stop localizing appointments of Vice-chancellors, Rectors and Provosts in their domain.
This information was disclosed in Abuja, when the supervising minister of Education in Nigeria, Mr. Wike stated while meeting with Heads of Federal Tertiary Institutions to discuss challenges facing federal and public higher educational institutions in Nigeria.
Also speaking on the ongoing discussion on dichotomy between the Polytechnics and universities, Mr Wike said that the strife among polytechnics lecturers is not creating enabling environment to build capacity for adequate teaching in polytechnics.
As the Chairman of Governing councils colleges of Education, Emmanuel Nosike, said the on-going strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP and Colleges of Education, COEASU will in few days be called off, which the staff at Dailyschoolnews believe is connected with the meeting which is scheduled tomorrow, been the 12th of June 2014
According to Wike, who said and we quote him directly: “The Nigeria Federal Government has no business in the appointment of vice-chancellor, rectors and provost but what is important is to ensure that due process is followed.
“They are federal government institutions and not community schools. So we must encourage everybody that is qualified to via for a position without consideration of where the person comes from.
“Even when people apply for a position but because he or she is not from a particular local government despite the fact that he is from the state, the council still discriminate them and the position will not be given to them.
He also went on to say this and we once again, quote him “This is a federal government university appointment and they are intellectuals. Appointment of Vice Chancellor, Provost and Rectors should be based on qualifications not local areas”.
On dichotomy between universities and polytechnics in Nigeria, he said “Internal strife among lecturers in polytechnics is making it difficult for the federal government to solve the problem of dichotomy between universities and polytechnics, if the Lecturers will come together in one voice and say no to Polytechnics discrimination, then the federal government will have no other option but to compiled.
“The same people who are calling for dichotomy don’t want Professors in their schools, yet you want to award degrees like universities and don’t want to have professors amongst you.
“It is imperative for us all to allow efficiency to rule. We might not be 100% right but we must do the right things all the time to ensure that things work out right for us”.
Also speaking on security, Wike, tasked all the Heads of Federal Tertiary Institutions to be at alert and vigilant.
“We all know the security situation facing Nigeria as a country, and we must all be at alert and have people who are monitoring your campuses in case of any unusual movement”.
Mr Nosike also disclosed that the council members were advised to enforce laws empowering them to appoint the Head of Public tertiary institutions.
Also speaking on efficiency, Mr Nosike, said that the members would urge merit and would allow efficiency to thrive in their various academic institutions.
