Latest news reaching our news desk this morning, is that the federal government, academic staff union of Polytechnic and the student government had some big time argument as to who the current ASUU strike is favoring.
There was a mild drama Tuesday at the meeting convened to find solution to the lingering strike of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) when Polytechnic students accused their lecturers of being selfish with their strike.
According to the President of the National Association of Polytechnics Students(NAPS), Ogbonnaya Sunday, the lecturers are only pressing for things that will favour them, omitting the main issue of concern to the students in their demands, HND-BSc dichotomy.
Mr Sunday warned that if the industrial dispute between the Federal Government and the Polytechnic Lecturers is not resolved within two weeks, the students will take to street.
But the President Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Chibuzo Asomugha, wandered if the lectuerers had been invited for a meeting with the ministry of education or to be embarrassed by their students.
He questioned the sincerity of the Federal Government for spreading stories about the meeting before the lecturers were told about the agenda of the meeting.
He said the Polytechnics lecturers had included the issue of discrimination against polytechnic graduates in their 13-point demand, but it was omitted when the government team chose four issues it could solve out of the 13 issues.
He said even the needs assessment committee set up to tour polytechnics and assess the level of decay in the system has not started its work since it was set up in October last year because government said it must be funded by the TETfUND which hasn’t released any money to the committee.
The Supervising minister of education, Nyesom Wike, said the ASUP president was selective in his criticism of the NAPS president as he didn’t address the Students’ leader’s criticism of the government.
He said the selection of the four out of the 13 issues was collectively done by both the government and the lecturers, and not the government alone.
He said the Federal Government has addressed the issue of salary structure for the lecturers as it is included in the 2014 budget and that what is left is how it will pay the 20.4 billion salary arrears to the lecturers. The meeting them moved into a close door session after which the lecturers are expected to brief the press about the meeting.

It’s only God dat can our educational sector in Naija!
Well,it is only in this country (nigeria)that govt and it’s functionaries does not understand the value of education.in regard to Asup pretence of trying to level the diferencies btwseen Bsc and Hnd is only a divisionary ploy.speaking consciously in regard to the strugle btween both parties, from all indication Asup is not sure footed in the issue of leveling the dicotomy btween BSC and HND bcos their body languages and actions is revesling a pourtpori of 419 and betrayal. This go on to explain that the kind of people we ve in the educational sector, polytechnic to be precise, are armed robers, dubious and self centered lecturers who are always after money money,if possible all ot them should be sacked.bcos their existence in the sector has become a corg in the wheels of progress, not only to the student but also to the growth and development of the nation.on the part o fFG, if the govt is sincere,if the govt is in its posion as in servant to master, if it focussed in carrying everyone along,i dont see the need for all these strke.during 2011 election we(youth) stood by him(Goodluck Ebele Jonathan DR) after he won, we all rejoiced bcos the bible said thst when the rightous man is in power the nation rejoices.but in the case of our president the reverse is the case, what we experienced was death, crisis, bombing and terror on everyside. Immidiatelly after the election we in the northen part of country exprienced crisis which took life and property, followed by bombing trait, rumurs of crisis and fear of being killed.all these experiencies which we encounted, nigerians expected compansation to be the tranqualizing force , rather all we see in adition is STRIKE from resident Doctor, Assuu,Asup,Colleges of edu even primary school almost join the throng. Now 2015 is around the conner and maybe we will be expected to cast our vote NO WAY.
If the fedral govt feels too havy in mobilizing us,i think its high time we engage ourselfs in whatever manner prefarably destructively.after all that is the only language govt understands. All the stakeholders in this isue should begin to wake up fron their slumber this a warning enough is enough.
Pls asup hve pity on us d students ooh.time is going,we students re pleading 2 u asup chairman 2 pls call off d strike.please please and please.
Please we d students of polytechnics are tired of staying at home. If the govenment ignors this sector then this countary will not be developed in terms of tecnology. Please federal govenment come to our aid so students don’t take it to d streets.
pls in all our understanding wisdom is the principle thing. what am saying,we shudnt act forcefully but i no it is our right to protext for BSC and HND which i no there is no different between them. let us prayGOD shud help us achieve the demand,THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.
I knw they wnt talk abt d one dat wil favour the studnts.my own is dat dis strike should be called off as soon as possible o.when two elephant fights,d Grass suffers.nw d studnts are nw suffering for wat they knw nothing abt yet they hv nothng to gain 4rm it.I Tire 4 Niger system of Education cos its realy annoying.
seriously dis strike is really getting out of hand and it is really frustrating student. I regret being a Nigerian
Don’t say that CJ, we’re growing, and prayer + good government will see us be better.
Suggestion: I think all institutions supose to offer admision to students while resolving theirs issues wit the Fed Govt, in order to make any student who chose poly rather than picking another Jamb Form. Is a waste of time and resourses. They shoud at least let the students no theirs Faith, whether/not they are favour.
God save us from this wicked and selfish men who dont care about our future
It is only ALLAH will deliver us frm ds our so call leaders they used our discriminate btw HND n Bsc. fo there own interest, we students let us come together and protest fo our right
ONLY GOD WILL HELP
NOW THAT WE HAVE HARD ALLOT ABOUT THE WAY THAT 2.40BILLION# CAN BE RELEASE TO THE LECTURERS, I ALSO HARD ABOUT THE DICHOTOMY WHICH THE DID NOT REMEMBER AGAIN IN THE MEETING WHILE IT SHOULD BE THE FIRST ISSUE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE DISCUSS BUT TURNED OUT TO BE A LEFT-OUT. SO NOW WE AS THE STUDENT’S OF POLYTECHNIC THAT HAVE BEEN IN THE HOUSE FOR UP-TO 6 MONTHS NOW TELL WHAT WE SHOULD HAVE IN MIND, I MEAN THERE IS SOME THING AM EXPECTING TO HEAR WHICH IS STILL MISSING, ONE MAY BE ASKING WHAT AM I EXPECTING TO HEAR IS NOTING BUT … WHEN ARE WE RESUMING, BECAUSE I WANT TO GO BACK TO SCHOOL TODAY OR TOMORROW . F.G (GOODLUCK EBERE JONATHAN) PLEASE DO SOME THING URGENT BEFORE STUDENT’S WILL PERISH IN THE STREET!
this is realy unfair! Dis student are the leaders of tomorow, why treating them like this now! FG! ASUP! call of the strike pls
i tink its high tym,we fought for ourselves on dis bsc-hnd issue, if we d student dont fight both govt and lecturers are not ready to help, mayb all polytechnics student shud fix a date and go on rampage on both fed govt and d lecturers i bliv dia will be solution to dis.we nid to take it serious wt dem. u dont crack a palm kernel wit a mere smile
Pls, let both d lectueres nd d governmnt properly look into dz issue of strike. cos, we d student r not happy on how higher institutions are been run in dz country. So, they should resolve dz issue so dat we can go bk to scul pls.
