2014 May ASUP Strike Update: We’ll Call Off ASUP STRIKE Immediately Only If…

According to the President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Dr Chibuzor Asomugha, who had on Wednesday, disclosed to the general public, that the Union is ever ready to call off the 10 months old strike immediately, if the union got a feedback on the renegotiated demands from the new committee led by the Minister of Labour, Chukwuemeka Wogu.

The ASUP President also went further to say that the Federal Government had stopped paying the striking lecturers salaries since March 21, and have said absolutely nothing about this, which they called or tagged “No work, No Pay”

Dr. Chibuzor Asomugha also went further to say that the “no-work-no pay rule’’ which was forcedly imposed on the union by the federal government had forced the union to device other measures of sustaining its members.

The ASUP president also accused the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, of “ working at cross purposes with the union in the ongoing action instead of holistically addressing the issues surrounding it’’.

Asomugha also disclosed to the general public, that the acting minister of education was not doing enough to resolve the face-off between the union and the government which led to the strike.

Asomugha also said that the federal government had so far failed to keep to its promises at different occasions which was promised to the union.

The ASUP president also said that President Goodluck Jonathan was kept in the dark on the union’s action, saying ASUP had lost confidence in the minister.

He, however, expressed faith and hope that the Minister of labour, Chief Chukwuemeka Wogu-led negotiating committee set up by Jonathan would bring an end to the strike faster.
