Adamawa State (Adamawapoly) Polytechnic Pulls Out Of ASUP Strike and Resumes 16th June, 2014

IS the ASUP fight with the federal government going way to far for some polytechnics rectors? Or is ASUP plainly greedy and some rectors are releasing that now? Well, latest information reaching our educational news publishing portal today, is that the leadership of Adamawa State Polytechnic (ASUP), Yola has turn away from the currently ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and directed all lecturers and students of the institution to resume on Monday, 16th June, 2014.

But it seems like the ASUP chapter is in war with the school authorities, as we were able to gather, the ASUP chairman of the polytechnic, Comrade Coleman Goji called on the both lecturers or students to disregard the directive, saying the strike will not be called off until their demands were met.

While speaking with journalists at a press conference in Yola, Adamawa State capital, the rector of the polytechnic, Professor Umar Bobboi, disclosed that the striking lecturers would not be allowed to hold the institution to ransom and that academic activities must resume in full.

The AdamawaPoly rector also went on to described the ASUP demands as ill-motivated and contrary to labour laws, and here’s his exact statement:

“The demand for payment of 15% SIWES allowance arrears for the period between August 2011 and December 2013, amounting to N160 million is shocking and very much outrageous.”

The Rector also disclosed that the Adamawa state government has directed the institution to pay SIWES allowance arrears to academic staff effective from August 2011 to July 2012 using internally generated revenue and the payment has already commenced.
