Nigeria Universities – Polytechnics and College of Education news Nigerian Educational News | Zenith Of Educational NewsLatest educational news reaching us today, is that Students of the College of Education, Kwara State Polytechnic, along with their other counterparts from several other tertiary institutions in the area today, being 28th of May 2013, continued their protest in Ilorin, the state capital, over yesterday’s shooting of one of their fellow students by a policeman.
The student, named Ahmed Dayo, who according to our correspondent, is receiving treatment at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, was shot by a reckless policeman, who was deployed to a bullion van being used by a commercial bank.
When the policeman was asked why he shot the student, he response by saying that he did not intend to shot the student, who was in a taxi, but that he was trying to shoot out the cab’s tires to clear the way for his van.
Responding in anger to what they characterized as the “barbaric and senseless” shooting of their fellow student, the students proceed to school, and according to a friend, the students were said to be in their thousands, thereby making bonfires on such major streets as Taiwo, Unity, and Muritala, on their way to the Government House.
Their action paralyzed commercial and social activity in the town.
Condemning the incident, the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights had today, described it as further evidence of Nigeria as a failed state, also pointing out that across all of the country’s geo-political zones, there is insecurity of life and property in Nigeria.
