Federal Gov’t Ready to Tackle Challenges Facing Nigeria Educational Sector

The Nigeria president, President Goodluck Jonathan had on Saturday, the 21st of June 2014, informed newsmen that the Federal Government would comprehensively tackle challenges facing all sectors of the country’s education.
The president made this clear at the combined 21st, 22nd and 23rd convocation of Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna.
According to the president, who said and we quote him “Our aim in government is to address comprehensively the challenges facing all sectors of education.
“We must move the focus from mere acquisition of certificates to the development and application of skills for which individual students are best suited’’.
The President also went on to stress that the need for reorientation of our value system with increased emphasis on conduct, character and competence.
The president, who was represented by Dr John Mack, the Permanent Secretary, of the Federal Ministry of Education.
However, the President also went on to persuade all educated persons in Nigeria not to see people who did not have university degree as second class citizens.

“I set up a committee in April, headed by the Secretary to the Government of Federation, to look into the disparity between HND and Bachelors degree in the Public Service,’’ he said.

The president also went on to urged citizens of the federal republic, to support people who could add value to themselves and the society by acquiring higher education.

Jonathan also used the medium, to encourage those who could excel in other areas to pursue their genuine interests and develop their skills, saying that education Is always good, but should not be the only interest we have as citizens, but also in developing out skills and talents.

President Jonathan, who did not fail to address the securities challenges in Nigeria, also went on to called on Nigerians to be security conscious and report suspicious persons to security agencies, saying that “this war against terror can only be won if we work cooperatively.’’

The president also said this and we quote him “Innocent lives are being wasted by some people who have chosen to undermine our cohesiveness as a people, they will not succeed’’.

The president, concerned about the youths of the country, went on to advised youths in Nigeria to shun political thuggery or acts capable of undermining free, fair and credible elections as the 2015 general elections are fast approaching, and some politicians are ready to use them as thugs to rig elections.

We would also love you to note that earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Musbau Akanji, disclosed that the educational institution was graduating 7, 482 students for three academic sessions of 2010/2011, 2011/2012 and 2012/13. (NAN)
