According to latest news reaching us, the members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Thursday marched on the streets of Yola, the Adamawa State capital, over the delay by the state government to pay their supplementary allowances.
According to our informant who was present at the location, disclosed to us through a phone call that the corps members barricaded the road leading to the private residence of the state Governor, Alhaji Murtala Nyako, demanding the payment of their allowances.
And under the state government policy, the Adamawa State Post-primary School Board pays N2,000 to each corps member posted to the board to augment their monthly stipend from the federal government, as an incentive to encourage them take up postings to schools in the rural area.
However, the Batch “A” NYSC members, who passed out yesterday and had served with the board resorted to protest to make the government pay them their accumulated allowance of N22,000 each.
They also marched on the board’s headquarters in Yola and held the workers hostage for several hours during the protest.
A team of riot policemen was drafted to the scene to restore order as the corps members ignored pleadings to leave the place, insisting that they would not go until they were paid their allowances.
Some of the protesting corpers said that most of them served in villages and with their discharge from the NYSC, they were stranded in Yola as they had expected that they would get the money to keep the going strong.
The protesters also carried placards to showcase their angry and annoyance with inscriptions like:
“Pay Us Our Money”, “We No Go Gree O”, “Stop Eating Our Money”
One of the protesting corps members, Ajiboye Tajudeen, told our correspondent this and we quote him:
“When we got our posting to the post-primary school board, we were told that they would pay at the end of our service year. Now today (yesterday), we are through nobody has come to tell us why we have not got our N22,000.
“Instead of coming out to address us, the Executive Secretary of the board, Ayuba Njjodi , took to his heels.”
However, when the executive secretary of the board was contacted on his mobile phone, Njjodi, said he had to flee for his life in a bid to escape a mob attack, adding: “as I speak with you now, I am with the secretary to the state government over the issue.”
Funnily, when asked if he has anything to do with the corps members allowance, he denied the allegation, saying that he had not collected the corps members’ allowances.
Please Adamawa government, pay the corps members their money, it’s their right, and they are serving the Nation! Their motherland.
