The latest breaking news reaching our desk has it that the current Governor of Lagos state has propose reduction in the school fees of the Lagos state University.
The crisis at the Lagos State University over fee hikes was the cause that result to the proposition of reduction in the school fees of LASU.
It was carried out by the outraged students which led to protests reached another juncture yesterday with Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State proposing a reduction of tuition.
During a meeting yesterday with the protesting students that was when and where Gov. Fashola made the proposal. The students, under the supports of Education Rights Campaign (ERC), are demanding full reversal of the hiked fee.
Gov. Fashola teased the students and members of the ERC to consult among them and propose an acceptable reduction.
So after the meeting, some of the student executives in the ERC told Sahara Reporters that, even though they would hold meetings and consult with other activist groups, they remain committed to fighting for a total reversal, in the school fees.
“In fact, we believe education should be totally free and not an option of a reduced fee. The government has every resource to achieve that,” said Mr. Hassan Soweto of the ERC.
According to SaharaReporters, that, this year, no disciplinary faculty in the institution has up to 500 students.
“This year, for example, there are only 15 students in the Faculty of Law,” the source said. He added that the institution may be considering the option of merging departments and lying off some of the lecturers due to the unfortunate decline in the number of students wishing to enrol at the university.
One of the protesting student leaders added that the “It’s sad that the Lagos State government is betraying the legacy of the late great Chief Awolowo who laid the foundation of free education,”
