ASUP – COEASU Strike 2014: Strike May End Strike As Union and Minister Of Education Meet on 24th

Latest information reaching our news desk today, is that the current ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and College Of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) is likely to be called off after the meeting between the union and the Federal Government has been scheduled to hold on thursday, the 24^th of April, 2014.

According to latest report and information reaching our news desk from our correspondent, who disclosed to us that the Supervising Minister of Education will meets with governing councils of Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in Kaduna on Thursday, been the 24^th of April, 2014, and the sole aim of the meeting is to discuss the modalities for re-opening of the Federal Polytechnics and College of Education for lectures.

Also following a positive outcome of negotiation with leaders of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, the current Nigerian supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike disclosed that he will be meeting with the governing councils of Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education to fine tune details to re-open the schools affected by strike.

Nyesom Wike also disclosed that he will meet the governing councils with the following personnel as listed below:

The Executive Secretaries of National Board of Technical Education, NBTE,
National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE.

However, there’s good news as the COEASU leaders has agreed to the two installmental payment offered by the Federal Government, which has led to the commencement of necessary payment procedures.

It was gathered that the meeting will discuss the modalities for re-opening of the Federal Polytechnics for lectures.

While discussing on this issue, the Rectors of the respective Polytechnics are all requested to comply with the directives of the governing councils on the resumption of the schools.

Already, branches of ASUP, especially in the north are meeting to pull out of the on-going strike, since some academic institutions are already pulling out.

We were able to learn that the decision is in line with the resolution which has been reached at the last ASUP National Executive council meeting in Yandev, Benue State.

For your information and clarity, the Academic staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) embarked on an indefinite strike in September 2013 over the non-release of the white paper on the Visitation Panel to Federal Polytechnics.
