Not Again! WE Wouldn’t Hesitate To Resume Strike IF — ASUU Leadership

After the The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) just called off their strike has stated that it will not hesitate to resume its suspended five-month old strike if the federal government fails to honour its own part of the agreement.

While announcing the suspension of their five month strike, in Minna, Niger State capital yesterday, the ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, disclosed to Journalists around the Arena that the lecturers’ struggle was not political but to salvage the country’s universities from total collapse ad help build a better Varsities for Nigeria future leaders.

While he was also speaking during a press briefing, the ASUU president, DR. Fagge also added that after their marathon meetings Monday to Tuesday morning at Federal University of Technology Gidakwanu, Minna, it became imperative to suspend the strike.

Also briefing Journalists at a press briefing which took place at Bosso campus of FUT Minna, DR. Nassir also disclosed that their struggle was based on the constitution of the union which compels it to establish and maintain just and proper condition of service for all members bearing in mind that the union would at all times protect and advance the social economic and cultural interest of Nigeria.
He said, “We have undertaken to go back to classrooms, laboratories etc, to do our best for our students, their parents, and our country. We are going back to rekindle the motivation and aspiration in our members to strive to encourage our students to excel, all in its expectation that government will sincerely honour its own part of the bargain.

“Our union is therefore bound by its constitution to make positive contributions to the economic and social progress of Nigeria, her association and interest our struggles reinforce, and are, in turn, reinforced by these ideals”.
According to him, the union struggle is animated by a vision of a country united by the people themselves and not by ethnic, religious, and regional champions as well as “by clubs of the rich bearing the name of political parties”.
He stated that, the union struggle over the past five months might be misrepresented, maligned or vilified but they stood by the vision of the principle outlined by the union which led to the agreement with the government, necessitating the suspension of the strike.
The ASUU President stated that, the meeting has resolved to accept the resolution signed between the Union and the Federal Government on the 11th December 2013 with the president of NLC as witness and also agreed to consciously and diligently monitor the implementation of the resolution.
