Nigeria Universities – Polytechnics and College of Education news Nigerian Educational News | Zenith Of Educational NewsASUU members are really making it a tough one for federal government, as the lecturers of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) have defied directives by the authorities to resume academic activities.
According to a statement which was issued by the school leadership, announcing Monday, the 9th of December, as the resumption date for 2012/2013 second semester academic activities in the university.
But the local ASUU leadership ignored the directive as the lecturers vows to continue their strike and fight for their rights (and that of Nigeria varsities).
As a result the school has remained shut and no academic activities is currently on-going.
The Uniport chapter of ASUU rose from a meeting at the ‘Abuja’ campus of the university, yesterday, with a resolution to continue the strike till the federal government meet their demand.
While Speaking exclusively to Dailyschoolnews.com, the Chairperson of the union, Prof. Antonia Okerengwo, said that the strike would continue till the federal government meet their demand.
“We sang our solidarity song today at our congress. The hall was full. Lecturers were at the meeting,” she said.
Some students who spoke with our reporter, said they were around to see if the lecturers were ready for them.
They said they were resident in Port Harcourt. “We just came around to see if things had taken shape in the school. Some of us live in Port Harcourt, so we will be going back today. Our friends in other states will depend on us for information on resumption,” they said.
A correspondent from Dailyschoolnews also went round the school yesterday observed the presence of student and a few lecturers.
Although most of the lecture halls were empty as at the time of visit, students were seen milling around the premises, doing absolutely nothing but chit-chatting.
