Prof. Festus Iyayi Death Might Prolong ASUU’s Strike!

Yesterday, we received the devastating news that the former president of the Association of Senior Staff of Universities, ASUU, Professor Festus Iyayi is dead.
According to information sent directly from asuu’s official board, the Professor died Tuesday morning in a car crash while he was on his way to Kano to participate in today’s National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) expected to declare an end to the over 4-month strike.

Since he was preparing to attend the meeting today in which the strike will be called off, this might put a hold to the call off.

According to the current ASUU President Dr. Nasir Fagge confirmed his death to the public, when he said that the sad news was broken to the union a few hours ago.

Prof. Iyayi was president of ASUU from 1986 to 1988.

Prof. Iyayi was born in 1947, in Ugbegun, Ishan, Edo State.

In the year 1968, the prof. left the shores of Nigeria to pursue his higher education, obtaining a M.Sc in Industrial Economics from the Kiev Institute of Economics, in the former U.S.S.R., and then his Ph.D from the University of Bradford, in England.

In the year 1980, the professor returned home and went back to Benin, his home town and became a lecturer in the Department of Business Administration at the University of Benin, UNIBEN.

The professor is a worldwide known author, with four books to his credit, which includes:

• Violence,
• The Contract,
• Heroes,
• Awaiting Court Martial.

The late Prof also won the Commonwealth Prize for Literature for his book “Heroes” in 1988.
