Asuu Will Not Suspend It’s Current Strike Unless FG Meets It’s Demand. Asuu President.

Asuu President, Has yesterday said that they won’t suspend their ongoing strike if the FG refuses to abide and go by their rules.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said yesterday that it’s not going to suspend its current strike as spread and believed by government, unless the government demands are met.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, after a meeting with the various university vice-chancellors in Abuja gave the latest news to reporters that ASUU would call off its three-month strike on Monday, following the cooperation and assurances she got from the university chancellors.

But ASUU President, Prof Ukachuchwu Azuikwe, in a telephone interview with HNZ, yesterday said that, ASUU was not a member of the Association of Vice Chancellors, and because of that, do not have the right to call off the action until the government implemented its agreements with ASUU.

He also also said that the lecturers’ body, would not abide by the Association’s call to end the strike.
“It’s all government’s propaganda! ASUU won’t call off its strike so long as government shies away from the issue of effective funding of the universities”, Awuzie said.
The Nigeria union leader also expressed the union’s appreciation to the house of Senate for its efforts, especially in processing the bill for the extension of the retirement age of lectures from 65 to 70, which earlier brought about the Current Asuu Strike.

But which is awaiting the president’s assurance and seal to become a law, he also stated.

The year of retirement is just one of our demands, the funding is the cardinal. he stressed.
On a positive note, Awuzie said, “Mr.President has scheduled a meeting with ASUU on Monday, If government accepts to our demands and promise to implement it, that is when we will think of calling off the strike.

if the president accepts it, the National Executive Committee of ASUU will also have to meet and have other types of meetings to agree on when to call off the strike.

However, with the intervention of Mr. President, I believe the solution will come faster than expected.
ASUU president, Pro Awuzie stated.
