ASUP Strike Update 2014: ASUP Has No Reason To Continue With The Strike – ASUP Chairman

Is ASUP problem arising from within or their problem is encompassing them because of greed?

Well, latest information regarding the current ASUP strike, is that Malam Kabiru Yunusa, who is the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, has on Tuesday said that the polytechnic has no reason to continue with the strike because the major demands of ASUP, which include the following:

The inauguration of councils for polytechnics,
Formation of needs assessment committees,

have been met.

The chairman also disclosed to our official correspondent, that the Federal Government has directed the national chairman of ASUP to communicate with the Head of Service and the Minister of Education to consider how the disparity between university Degree and HND will be bridged.

One thing student needs to note, is that the very bones of contention between ASUP and the Federal Government are four issues which are germane to the technological development of the country.

Among the demands of ASUP are the following:

Non-release of the White Paper on the visitation panels to all the federal polytechnics,
Non-release of funds for the implementation of CONTISS 15 migration and its arrears,
Continued discrimination among the polytechnic graduates in both the private and public sectors of the economy,
Non-establishment of the National Polytechnic Commission,
Slow review of the Polytechnic Act by the National Assembly,
Underfunding of polytechnics,
Alleged lopsided disbursement of TETFUND grants, scholarships and other financial interventions in the education sector,

which has been to the disadvantage of the polytechnics, the state of state-owned polytechnics, coupled with the continued appointment of unqualified persons as Rectors of the polytechnics.

We call on the government and ASUP to quickly return to the negotiation table and put an end to the lingering strike actions.
