NDLEA Takes an ESUT student to court for smoking indian hemp in Campus Ground

Latest educational news reaching us today, is that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has just dragged a student, by the name of Jude Ugwu, who is a post graduate student of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), to the Federal High Court in Enugu State for hemp smoking.

According to our informat, the counsel to the plaintiff, Mr Uzoamaka Anigwe, said that Mr jude Ugwu was caught by the operatives of the NDLEA smoking Indian hemp around the Okpara Square axis in Independence Layout alone.

The Counsel to the plaintiff, Anigwe said that when he was sighted by a patrol team of the NDLEA, the accused started running.

However, Luck did ran out on Jude, when he was tracked down by the patrol team to his hide out.
The point that my learned colleague was canvassing as regards to the accused waiting for paper materials for his post graduate studies is baseless and a calculated attempt to deceive the court in granting him justice.

And what is more bizarre, is that the NDLEA were in court with some Indian hemp which was recovered from him when he was caught.
According to him, he said that he would certainly be glad, if the honorable court can convict him to serve as a deterrent to the Nigeria youths who have decided to engage in drug abuse instead of being useful to themselves,” he said.

And according to the counsel of the accused, Mr Francis Ajagu, said his client was arrested on March 30, 2012 where he was waiting for his cousin, Mr Emeka Ike, to collect some paper materials from him for his assignment.

He said this and we quote him:
My client was never caught with Indian hemp and neither was he caught smoking Indian hemp.
It was really surprising that before the arrival of Mr Emeka Ike who was supposed to hand over the materials to him, the operatives of NDLEA have whisked my client away to their office without listening to his own side of the story.
Here with me is Mr Emeka Ike who my client was waiting for, he is here before this honorable court to testify on the alleged accusation of Indian hemp smoking.

However, Justice D.V. Agishi said that the court had listened to the arguments and adjourned the case till the 2nd of August 2013 for further hearing and cross examination.
