War As Federal Government Warns Polytechnics To Stop Running Post HND, PGD Programmes

Some really alarming information reaching the DailyschoolNews mail box today, is that the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, is warning all polytechnics who are currently undertaking the post-graduate diploma programmes to stop it.
According to the Minister of Education, it is not part of their mandate.

According to the Minister of Education, Professor Rufa’i, who gave the warning on Monday, the 29th of April 2013 in Abuja, at the inauguration of the governing councils for the National Teachers Institute, National Educational Research Development Council, 15 federal polytechnics and 19 federal colleges of education.
The minister of education did directed that from now henceforth, no polytechnic convocation would hold without issuance of certificates to graduating students.
She also ordered that the provosts and registrars of colleges of education must sign an NCE certificates as obtained in polytechnics and universities.
Here are her exact words.
“The provosts and registrars of colleges of education should make sure, that they sign NCE certificates as obtained in polytechnics and universities.
According to her, the “Issuance of certificates to graduating students is a prerequisite for approval for holding convocations; thus no certificate, no convocation,” she directed.
Likewise, while addressing the inaugurated council members, The Education Minister, Prof Rufai also urged them to make sure that they encourage responsive and responsible unionism in their respective institutions and arrest problems like,
Cultism,
Drug abuse and other social vices among students.

She also said that Governing councils have a strategic role to play in facilitating the required transformation of the tertiary education sector in Nigeria, in order to actualise the desire of the government to provide easy access without compromising standards and quality.
She also state that the composition of these governing councils is apt and places high demands on you to work assiduously to realise these goals.

Professor Rufa’i went further to state that effective strategies should also be developed for early detection and eradication of all forms of vices such as,
Examination malpractice,
Sexual harassment,
Extortion,
Inducement,
Loss of examination scripts and results.

The Prof also advised the councils never to be lured into turning the prestigious fellowship awards to chieftaincy title affairs.
Also responding on behalf of his colleagues, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Chairman, Governing Council of College of Technology, Yaba, pledged to use their appointments to contribute to the development of the education sector.
Chief Ebenezer also thanked the Federal Government for the privilege to serve the country.
