Wonderful news reaching the DailyschoolNews.com editorial team today, is that after so many years of allocating carrying capacities to Nigerian universities, the National Universities Commission (NUC), is taking a bold step further, as they come up with the introduction of programme carrying capacities for all academic programmes in the Nigerian University System (NUS).
The Executive Secretary, Professor Julius A. Okojie, OON, did give out this information on Wednesday, the 10th Of April, 2013, while receiving a four-man delegation from Benson Idahosa University, Benin-City, Edo State, which was led by a member of the institution Governing Council, Engr. Emmanuel Egbagbe.
Professor Julius A. Okojie, who is currently the Executive Secretary of NUC, said that the proposed carrying capacity of each course would be determined by the following:
1. Demand,
2. Needs,
3. Its relevance to national development, which is based on the availability of requisite academic personnel and physical facilities.
The Prof also stated that the federal government policy on 60:40 ratio for Sciences and Arts was still in full force.
He also said that such policy, when implemented, would really go a long way in reducing unemployment.
He also said that some universities were in the habit of violating NUC regulations with respect to new programmes, postgraduate programmes and carrying capacity, thereby creating problems for students and parents.

Professor Okojie also said that the Commission, through the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN), was addressing the challenge of inadequate bandwidth and other ICT-related issues in the NUS.
Professor Okojie also assured, that this particular project, would not only provide adequate bandwidth, but also increase efficient inter-connectivity amongst universities and enable them to share resources and information.
