Even After the Court Order, We’ll Continue Negotiation with ASUU

asuu strike update 2022

The minister of Labour and employment, Chris Ngige has disclosed that the industrial court order, mandating members of the striking union, ASUU to resume school, will not stop the federal government negotiations with ASUU on their demands.

The Minister shared this information while receiving members of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) in his office in FCT, Abuja.

The minister for Labour and Employment said:

“The federal government of Nigeria will order the vice-chancellors and pro-chancellors to reopen the universities in line with the industrial court order given on the 21st of September, 2022.”

The Minister further revealed;

“The ruling by the industrial court, mandating members of the striking union to resume academic activities is in the best interest of the nation. It is a win-win situation for all Nigerians, including the Nigerian government, students, lecturers, and well-wishing Nigerians. I have just gotten the court order asking ASUU to go back to work. It is a sound judgment. With this court order, you can tell that there is no victor, no vanquished.

“You doctors in academics are for now members of ASUU, but, you are here, even though you have dissociated yourself and are working. We want to thank you for working and teaching your students.

“However, one thing I want to make clear today is that the court order will not be stopping us from going on with further negotiation and consultations with members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. The pro-chancellors met with Mr. President and made some demands, such as topping up government offers and seeing whether there could be some bailout.

“Mr. President (Muhammadu Buhari) said in considering it, he will consult stakeholders. So, he is going to consult everybody and give his final verdict.”
