COEASU 2014 Strike: Affected Students Pleads With FG to Negotiate With Lecturers

It’s no longer news that College of Education, Nigeria lecturers are on strike, however, the students are still worried that the three-month-old strike of lecturers of Colleges of Education nationwide, might not be coming to an end yet, even as the ASUP 2014 strike clocks 7 Month.

Several students express their feelings through Dailyschoolnews Discussion board and others through the Nigeria newspapers media.

The lecturers under the aegis of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) had on the 18^th of December, 2013 embarked on an indefinite strike to press home their demands.

According to the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) which demands include the following:

1. Non-implementation of the 2010 Federal Government – COEASU agreement,
2. Poor state of infrastructure,
3. Poor funding of the colleges.

According to Mr Olayanju Abolaji, the Chairman of COEASU, Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka Chapter, who disclosed to news men that the partial implementation of their demands by the government was “unacceptable.’’

According to the President of the students Union of the College, Olusola Ogunnowo, urged the federal government and the lecturer to sheathe their swords and come together for the betterment of Nigerian educational system.

Mr. Olusola described the situation as worrisome, and a steady idling away of students at home as a result of the strike, which may result to increase in laziness and crime.

“Both the government and the lecturers should consider our plight and shift ground.

“The Part 11 students are presently on teaching practice, and none of them are being supervised by the lecturers because of the strike.

“Strike is destructive to the nation’s education system and standard; it will also affect the academic calendar and prolong our stay in school,’’ he told NAN.

Most students displayed their displeasure with the continuous strikes plaguing the Nigeria educational system, and making Nigerians, as one of the worst educational system in the world.
